How to Treat quiz: Nocturnal enuresis in adulthood

Relevance to General Practice

Nocturnal enuresis refers to urinary incontinence that occurs during sleep. It is well- recognised as a disorder of childhood, however, also occurs as a distinct entity in 0.5-2.4% of the general adult population. The condition has a significant impact on quality of life and also affects the emotional and financial state of the individual. Studies in the UK have shown that 77% of patients with nocturnal enuresis will initially seek help from a GP. It is important to recognise, and may be a sign of more severe underlying pathology that requires treatment. The treatment of nocturnal enuresis needs to be multifactorial because the underlying pathology is multifactorial – it will not respond adequately to monotherapy. Treatment must be individualised based on identified causes and many therapies can be initiated by GPs without requiring referral to other specialists.
