141478 - Advanced Emergency Medicine Ultrasound (POCUS)

  • : Online

This 5-day course is relevant to general practitioners who want to expand their ultrasound skills. It is assumed that you have basic experience in E-FAST, cardiac and AAA scanning techniques and feel comfortable with basic image optimization. This course exposes you to the Rapid Ultrasound in Shock Protocol (RUSH) which allows you to assess patients using a multi-site approach whilst managing severely ill patients. By the end of the third day you will feel comfortable to perform and interpret a simple RUSH examination. Overall, this course is designed to take your clinical ultrasound practice to the next level extending your knowledge and skills through interactive case discussion and small group practical activities.

Relevance to General Practice

Point of care ultrasound machine has being widely applied by clinicians in critically ill patients [1,2]. Ultrasonographic assessment is mainly used in general practice, the emergency department and the intensive care unit to assess four separate body segments: thoracic (lung and pleural), abdominopelvic, vascular, and cardiac (basic and advanced). There are several protocols utilized to evaluate critically-ill patients which can be learnt in block or in modules and are scope of practice for general practitioners in Australia. A number of articles had demonstrated the applications and benefits of portable ultrasound machine in life-threatening illnesses by shortening decision-making processes and improving outcomes and patient safety [3-8].

Learning outcomes
  • Review the parameters of safe application of ultrasound in medical diagnosis
  • Review the physical principles, artifacts and the steps for image optimization while performing ultrasound
  • Consolidate "hands on" ultrasound scanning skills required to maximize diagnostic ability in answering relevant clinical questions
  • Differentiate the sonographic appearances of normal and abnormal structures required to answer common clinical questions
  • Perform Rapid Ultrasound in Shock (RUSH) protocol relevant for safer and faster decision-making processes whilst assessing unknown shock
