142574 - Ultrasound in Rural Medicine Core

  • : Online

Point of care ultrasound machine has become increasingly popular and affordable among general practitioners, particularly those working in rural remote areas. However, clinical ultrasound is one of the most highly operator-dependent skills, limited by time constraints, user experience and misleading images known as artefacts. This 3-day course is designed to give the general clinicians, and particularly, rural practitioners a solid grounding in the basics of ultrasound in E-FAST protocol, abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) assessment, gall bladder, basic cardiac and guided vascular access to provide safe and quality assured health care services.

Relevance to General Practice

There has been an expansion of the use of ultrasound across the Point of Care (POCUS) field due to its increased availability. This allows the General Practitioner to perform ultrasounds to gain information that may alter the clinical assessment and management of a patient. Australian rural and remote doctors have scope of practice which requires from them the ability to investigate and diagnose a large variety of clinical conditions as well as performing safe guided vascular access. Bedside ultrasound is a well established tool which provides not only information to diagnose and treat a particular illness, but also provides information which conveys follow up and continuity of care.

Learning outcomes
  • Identify the parameters of safe application of ultrasound in medical diagnosis.
  • Identify the physical principles, artefacts and the steps for image optimisation while performing ultrasound in general practice
  • Practice "hands on" ultrasound scanning skills required to maximise diagnostic ability in answering relevant clinical questions
  • Recognise the sonographic appearances of normal and abnormal structures required to answer common clinical questions
  • Perform E-FAST, AAA, Renal & Billiary Tract and Cardiac ultrasound studies and ultrasound guided Vascular Access
