142600 - Pre-employment Structured Clinical Interview (PESCI) Workshop
- : Online
This workshop will offer a comprehensive orientation to the Australian Healthcare system, Medicare legislations and the requirements of the Medical Board of Australia. It will also cover common medical scenarios that a medical practitioner can face in General Practice and will include practice PESCI cases. Moreover, IMGs in this workshop will have the opportunity to learn more about Australia’s culture, diversity and how to effectively formulate clinical management plans according to the most recent Australian guidelines.Relevance to General Practice
The AHPRA Registration Committee requires some candidates entering General Practice ton successfully complete a PESCI as a pre-requisite to be considered for conditional registration. The PESCI is conducted to assess whether the applicant has the knowledge, skills and experience to practice safely and effectively in a general practice position. It is an evaluation for suitability for a particular position and not an examination.
Due to the failure/absence of past medical workforce planning, Australia has suffered from workforce shortages in some specialties and geographic areas. IMGs, doctors who have completed their primary medical degree overseas, have been seen by governments as a means to fill these gaps and now make up over 40 per cent of the medical workforce in rural and remote areas. Australia might face a massive shortfall of doctors by 2025, when a large number of them are due to retire.
