The adult acute leukaemias are a group of heterogeneous disorders of haemopoiesis requiring prompt diagnosis and assessment. These conditions are fatal within weeks or months if untreated. GPs play a key role in diagnosis, referral to specialised services and management of patients who are increasingly being managed in the community with less toxic therapies.
