How to Treat quiz: Pelvic organ prolapse

Relevance to General Practice

Pelvic organ prolapse involves any or all of uterine prolapse, cystocoele, rectocoele and/orvaginal vault descent. Most prolapse is early stage and mildly symptomatic or asymptomatic. Conservative management options (including physiotherapy and pessaries) are generally appropriate initially in the majority of cases.
Higher-stage prolapse involves a greater likelihood of associated symptoms of lower urinary tract, anorectal or sexual dysfunction. Referral for comprehensive specialist assessment is more likely to be indicated with symptoms of other organ involvement, recurrent prolapse or if conservative measures have failed.
