Educate patients and evaluate their suitability for percutaneous valve intervention options.

Relevance to General Practice

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death and disease burden in Australia. CVD is a collective term for diseases of the heart and blood vessels. The term commonly includes diseases such as coronary heart disease, heart failure, cardiomyopathy, congenital heart disease, peripheral vascular disease and stroke. Many of these conditions can be life-threatening. When it comes to chronic cardiac conditions – we know comprehensive care is needed, but is not always provided. GPs play a critical role in assisting people in the management of their chronic conditions.
The Healthy Communities report also highlighted that among all people who visit the GP at least once in a year, the percentage of people who had one or more selected cardiovascular risk conditions ranged from 17% to 19% in metropolitan communities to 16% to 21% in regional and rural communities.
