How to Treat quiz: Changed behaviours in people with dementia

Relevance to General Practice

Changed behaviours are a common clinical feature during the course of the disease for people with dementia. A validated assessment framework is useful to guide interventions, assess response and modify the intervention if required. The cornerstone of managing changed behaviours in people with dementia is the implementation of an individualised non-pharmacological management program. Reserve pharmacological interventions for specific high-risk situations, given their similar effect size to non-pharmacological approaches and higher risk of adverse events, after an appropriate consent process including the risk of side effects and likelihood of benefit.
