The myeloproliferative neoplasms represent a broad category of disorders with varied disease courses. Consider these conditions as a differential diagnosis when a patient presents with splenomegaly, unusual thrombosis or abnormalities of their full blood count. Management is aimed at preventing complications and monitoring for progression to acute leukaemia. The myeloproliferative neoplasms are generally chronic diseases which are managed with close collaboration between GP and haematologist.
