Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a medical term that describes a group of conditions in which the intestines become inflamed. Australia has one of the highest incidence rates of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in the world. Early diagnosis and treatment for IBD is critical. 
While nearly all IBD patients will be under specialist care, with their medications instigated by IBD specialists, GPs will have a role in monitoring response to treatment and potential side effects of medications, arranging specialist appointments and reviewing endoscopies.
