151195 - Pain management master class - a practical approach to chronic pain management (2019)

The Pain Management Master Class is an interactive active learning module run over one or two days designed to enhance the GP management of patients with moderate to severe chronic non-cancer pain. It focuses on a biopsychosocial approach to assessing and managing chronic pain. It looks at both the role of medications and non-pharmacotherapies. In addition, it provides a systematic approach (based on universal precautions) to the use of opioid analgesics, if these are being considered.

Relevance to General Practice

Chronic pain is a common condition managed by GPs with 20% of the adult population having a chronic pain condition. Approximately half of these patients will have long-term disability associated with their chronic pain. 
This activity will assist GPs improve their skills to assess and manage more complex chronic pain presentations. 

Learning outcomes
  • Recognise the complexity of chronic pain and the benefits of a multidimensional approach to its assessment and management
  • Address psychosocial risk factors for developing long-term disability amongst patients with chronic pain
  • Recognise and be able to explain the limitations of codeine as an analgesic to manage chronic pain
  • Apply best practice principles when prescribing opioid analgesics in the management of moderate to severe chronic non-cancer pain
  • Utilise tools to support the assessment and management of chronic pain
