152625 - Skin Deep Dermatology

  • : Online

Skin Deep - Dermatology aims to equip GPs with the skills to confidently investigate, diagnose and treat a range of skin lesions, as well as recognise indications for referral. Delegates will discuss case studies and will participate in a practical skills session.

Relevance to General Practice

In Australia, skin cancer accounts for the largest numbers of cancers diagnosed each year. In 2012, Australia ranked second in the world in the highest incidence of melanoma.

GPs experienced an increase in patient encounters for non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) by 14% from between April 1998 and March 2000 to April 2005-March 2007. Specialist referrals for skin cancers account for almost one in five GP contacts and are the most common reason for medical specialist referral in Australian general practice.

Despite the prevalence of skin cancer and disease in Australia, medical schools often lowly prioritise dermatology. This leaves doctors to learn dermatology and skin cancer medicine at a post graduate level with many doctors lacking confidence in their ability to conduct a skin check.
