Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a common, preventable and treatable condition. COPD is associated with a host of significant chronic diseases, all of which increase its morbidity and mortality. 
This 1hr Category 2 activity, will recall criteria for diagnosing COPD, review current recommendations and guidelines for COPD management and describe individualised COPD medication and devices for patients with COPD.

Relevance to General Practice

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, reports that COPD was the fifth leading cause of death in 2015. COPD is a chronic condition that affects quality of life, interrupts daily activity, sleep patterns and ability to exercise. People with COPD report decreased quality of life and worse health compared to people without the condition. GPs are often the first contact point for patients with chronic respiratory symptoms and play a vital role in the detection, diagnosis and management of COPD.
