153183 - Occupational Lung Disease

  • : Online

I-MED Radiology aims to assist in improved patient outcomes by providing GPs with relevant, current and evidence based medical imaging education and information. This update will focus on occupational lung disease caused by silica exposure.

Relevance to General Practice

Silica dust is harmful when it is breathed in so you can be breathing it in without knowing. This can lead to lung cancer, silicosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and kidney disease. Those at greatest risk are miners, construction workers, farmers and engineers. As the general practitioner is often at the front line of patient care, it is vital for GPs to be aware of the correlation between workplace exposure and patient presentations and an understanding of the ILO classification system.

Learning outcomes
