How to Treat quiz: The short child

Relevance to General Practice

Short stature has become a great cause for concern on the part of parents, carers and physicians. Social judgements concerning competency and facility in sporting activities, schooling achievements and, the work place may be made based on the basis of height.
Normal growth is a good indicator of a child’s health and therefore assessment of growth should be an integral part of assessing a child’s general health and well-being. Abnormal growth may indicate the presence underlying pathology. Early detection and intervention allows management of the underlying condition and optimising final adult height.
