153747 - Treating Hepatitis C in General Practice Forum

  • : Online

This one day forum will bring together general practitioners from around Australia to share their experience with treating Hepatitis C. Delegates will learn from practices and localities that are achieving success in treating people with Hepatitis C in a range of primary care and priority settings.

Relevance to General Practice

GPs are often the first point of contact, and provision of continuing care, for people living with hepatitis C. They play an important role in not only screening people at risk for hepatitis C, but promoting lifestyle modifications, management of other co-morbidities and, since 1 March 2016, providing treatment, thereby reducing the mortality of hepatitis C and advanced liver disease. Treatment in primary care is suitable for most people living with hepatitis C, especially the estimated 90% of patients with no evidence of cirrhosis. This Active Learning Module will bring together GPs from around Australia to discuss barriers and strategies for success in treating people with hepatitis C in primary care and other priority settings. The Treating Hepatitis C in General Practice Forum will be delivered primarily by GPs who are experienced in treating patients with hepatitis C, with contributions from a number of specialist physicians.

Learning outcomes
  • Identify risk factors and perform assessment for advanced liver disease using the Australian Recommendations for the Management of Hepatitis C Virus Infection
  • Explain how the new direct acting antiviral treatments enable management of hepatitis C in general practice
  • Discuss the role of GPs in helping to eliminate HCV in Australia by 2030
  • Identify and implement strategies for overcoming barriers to treating hepatitis C in priority populations
  • Evaluate the feasibility of alternative models of care for the treatment of hepatitis C
