Relevance to General Practice

Nearly half of Australians with diabetes are not at HbA1c target. Patients with type 2 diabetes often experience prolonged periods of suboptimal glycaemic control before initiation of injectable therapy. Timely transition from oral to injectable therapies represents an important strategy in increasing the number of patients at HbA1c target. This may require challenging current barriers in both clinicians and patients that lead to delays, e.g. clinical inertia and fear of needles.
GPs, in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team, play a key role in helping patients successfully transition to injectable therapies. This case-based meeting aims to provide GPs with practical information that will assist them in advancing patients with type 2 diabetes from oral to injectable therapies, with the ultimate goal of improving the health outcomes of Australians

Learning outcomes
  • 1. Identify patients on oral therapies who could benefit from transitioning to injectable therapy
  • 2. Overcome barriers that lead to reluctance of clinicians and patients to transition to injectable therapies.
  • 3. Explain the role of injectable therapies in the management of type 2 diabetes according to updated guidelines
  • 4. Differentiate between currently available injectable therapies and identify appropriate therapies according to individual patient profiles.
  • 5. Address practical concerns about injectable therapies including sick day management, travelling and pre-surgical preparation
