This workshop aims to provide general practitioners with knowledge, understanding and ways for working with patients who come with different cultural beliefs and backgrounds. This way early health check and screenings can be carried out in a safe and welcoming environment for staff and client

Relevance to General Practice

ill health poses a serious threat to the wellbeing of Aboriginal communities and individuals, such as coronary heart disease, diabetes and chronic lower respiratory diseases. These diseases remain high in the death rate amongst Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. one of the main cause of hospitalization involved dialysis treatment, with preventable hospitalisations around three times higher than for non-Indigenous people

  • Identify historical and political influences impacting on Aboriginal people of today.
  • Reflect on one's personal perceptions that influence responses to Aboriginal people.
  • Identify barriers preventing access to services for Aboriginal peoples.
  • Identify ways to create “culturally safe” environments within the workplace
