How to Treat quiz: Post-traumatic stress disorder

Relevance to General Practice

Most Australians have been exposed to potentially traumatic events that have the potential to cause PTSD or other mental health problems.
Most people who are exposed to PTEs are resilient; they manage any understandable distress and sustain or quickly return to their usual level of functioning. Post-traumatic growth has also been described when, following a PTE, a person acquires positive change in the form of new skills, knowledge and coping strategies that occur as a result of the struggle with challenging life crises.
While not the only problem to linked to traumatic events, PTSD is the signature condition that arises following psychological trauma and for that reason it will be the focus of this article.
