158965 - Medicinal Cannabis in Anxiety and Insomnia

  • : Online

Increase GP awareness of the role of medicinal cannabis in the treatment of anxiety and insomnia

Relevance to General Practice

While medicinal cannabis is legally accessible to medical practitioners for their patients, 1000s of Australians are self-medicating with illegal cannabis to treat a range of serious conditions. A recent survey revealed Australian GPs get constant inquiries from their patients about medicinal cannabis, but the majority of GPs feel their knowledge is inadequate to discuss its access, safety, and effectiveness. Proper training and education around medicinal cannabis will enable GPs to talk to their patients and deter them from using illegal cannabis. Anxiety disorders and insomnia disorders are some of the most common types of mental health disorders. Cannabidiol (CBD) efficacy studies have shown its ability to reduce psychotic, anxiety and withdrawal symptoms may also have therapeutic potential for insomnia.
