Relevance to General Practice

Breast cancer was the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia in 2014. It was also the most commonly diagnosed cancer in females. Mammographic density is a term used to measure and compare the different types of breast tissue visible on a mammogram. Cancers can sometimes be hidden or ‘masked’ on a mammogram image if the breasts are very dense. Iis harder to pick up cancers on mammograms of dense breasts than mammograms of mostly fatty breasts. Research also shows that breast density can itself be a risk factor for developing breast cancer. Breast screening is the best method of detecting breast cancer in its earliest stages. Early detection offers the best chance of successful treatment and recovery. GP's play an important role across the cancer continuum: in primary cancer prevention, discussing and delivering cancer screening tests, accurately diagnosing people with cancer when they present in the community, providing supportive care during and after treatment.
