159954 - GPCE - Keynote: We are getting fatter and sicker - what are we going to do about it?

  • : Online

Over the past 40 years we have got steadily fatter and sicker. Now 70% of Australian men are overweight or obese, as are more than half of our women and over a quarter of our children. There are nearly 2 million people with diabetes in this country and the incidence of many other chronic diseases is steadily increasing. Why has this occurred? How are we, on the primary care coalface, going to turn things around?

Relevance to General Practice

The GPCE offers GP delegates over 50 topic choices over three days. The subjects span many therapeutic areas allowing GPs to self-select the topics of most interest to the individual and their practice.

Learning outcomes
  • Understand the issues surrounding obesity and health in Australia today
  • Consider what actions can be taken in the field of public health to improve national health outcomes
  • Incorporate changes to general practice to support the changing health needs of the Australian population
