159998 - How to Treat quiz: Primary hyperparathyroidism
Relevance to General Practice
Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is the third most common endocrine disorder, however but is largely under-recognised and under-treated. It can present at any age from early childhood through to old age but is most prevalent in postmenopausal women where it can be found in up to 3%. Untreated, PTHPT is associated with a significant increase in mortality, predominantly from cardiovascular disease. The only available treatment is surgery. Parathyroidectomy leads to symptom reversal in the majority of patients, including restoration of bone mineral content in those with established osteoporosis.
