160060 - Intimate partner violence

  • : Online

This gplearning ALM will explore the issue of intimate partner violence (IPV), and help GPs to identify and support patients experiencing abuse from a current or former partner (eg husband/wife, boy/girlfriend or lover) to improve their health outcomes.

Relevance to General Practice

1 in 6 Australian women and 1 in 16 men, since the age of 15, have been subjected to physical and/or sexual violence by a current or previous cohabiting partner. Additionally, almost 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men have experienced emotional abuse from a current or previous partner since the age of 15. This abuse directly impacts the health and wellbeing of these victims and their families.

These victims will present to a GP more frequently than non-abused persons, however often do not disclose the abuse as the cause of their injuries or illnesses. GPs therefore need to be aware of the signs and symptoms of intimate partner violence and inquire about possible abuse where suspected. GPs also need to know how to respond to disclosures of IPV and manage risks to ensure the safety of the victim and any children involved; and this activity will explore this aspect of a GP’s role.
