160067 - Team Care of the Bariatric Patient: A Multidisciplinary Approach

  • : Online

The activity will be presented by a team of specialists in the fields of surgery, general practice, dietetics and psychology. This activity will cover common comorbidities associated with obesity, recommendations for referral to specialists and allied health professionals, considerations relating to adolescent and elderly patients, and factors effecting fertility and pregnancy in the perioperative bariatric patient. It will include a balance of didactic sessions and hands-on instruction. Attendees will be encouraged to participate in the interactive sessions which will include a skills workshop, small group discussions and case studies.

Relevance to General Practice

Obesity is widely recognised as Australia's leading health concern. Australian GP's are central to the coordination and management of obesity care. This activity is aimed at providing comprehensive education to GP's about the multidisciplinary approach in the management of the bariatric patient, covering considerations relating to surgical intervention, psychology, dietetics, age of patient and factors effecting fertility/pregnancy. The GP's role in obesity management is more involved than referral to specialists, and in many patients, the GP is central to providing support and advice where there may be barriers to allied health including location and financial limitations of the patient. The focus of this activity is to facilitate improving overall health by reducing the presence and / or potential for comorbidities.
