161772 - Knee osteoarthritis: how good is conservative management and if, when and how to move to surgery

  • : Online

Musculoskeletal conditions are responsible for a major burden in the Australian health system, affecting around 28% of the population. The assessment and management of musculoskeletal conditions and sporting injuries is a significant part of the workload of general practice. By the end of this activity, participants will be able to: (1) discuss the current guidelines for the management of low back pain (2) outline the impact imaging and health professional’s communication style have on recovery of patients with low back pain; and (3) explain the triage process for patients with low back pain at public hospitals.

Relevance to General Practice

The assessment and management of musculoskeletal conditions and sporting injuries is a significant part of the workload of general practice. General Practitioners play an important role within the Australian healthcare system in the prevention, early detection and management of chronic musculoskeletal diseases. The burden of arthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions can be reduced through intervention at various points along the disease continuum, including prevention, early diagnosis, prompt initiation of treatment, ongoing management and timely access to surgical interventions such as joint replacement.
