162578 - Neurosurgery Update

  • : Online

To update General Practitioners on the assessment, diagnosis, treatment and management of common spine presentations, cervical spine presentations, unruptured aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, dural arteriovenous fistulas and movement disorders, in the context of the primary care setting.

Relevance to General Practice

Back pain is one of the most common presenting complaints with approximately 70% of the adult population experiencing a significant episode of low back pain at some time in their lives.1 According to Williams et al. (2010)2 key aspects of the usual care that general practitioners provide patients with spinal issues frequently do not align with the care recommended in evidence-based guidelines.
Brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations (brain and spine) and dural arteriovenous fistulas (brain and spine) are conditions that can result in death or significant neurological disability. Early diagnosis and treatment, however, can lead to excellent outcomes and it is important therefore, for General Practitioners to understand the many factors that influence the management of patients with unruptured lesions3. The clinical presentation, imaging characteristics and treatment modalities for these lesions will be presented and discussed.
