162715 - Valvular Heart Disease - addressing the under recognition of heart valve disease

Small group learning event designed for up to 40 participants. The event will provide an opportunity for GP's to meet specialists to discuss heart valve disease. Topics include addressing the under recognition of heart value disease, the role of the geriatrician and the surgeon in structural heart disease and the growing burden of aortic stenosis in our aging population.

Relevance to General Practice

Chronic disease, including cardiovascular diseases like valvular heart disease (VHD), are one of Australia's biggest health challenges. Untreated valve disease leads to premature death, which can be preventable with valve surgery. GP's need to remain aware of be unskilled on new and current treatment options for patients with VHD. An understanding of various valvular disorders, including the pathophysiology, natural history and signs and symptoms is important to aid in the diagnosis and management of VHD.

  • Recognise the clinical significance of signs and symptoms of aortic and mitral valve disease.
  • Identify the care needs of the elderly population with structural heart disease*
  • Outline modern surgical options available for patients with structural heart disease
  • Describe the pathophysiology, natural history and management of aortic stenosis.
