162845 - Benzodiazepines

  • : Online

GPs will be provided with 2 in-depth sessions following patient case studies addressing `best practice’ assessment and decision making around both prescribing and deprescribing benzodiazepines. The sessions will be provided by GP and addiction specialists Dr Craig Rodgers and Dr Hester Wilson and CNCs Ms Lisale Hakerian and Zara Bernardi.

Relevance to General Practice

Benzodiazepines are commonly prescribed by general practitioners in Australia. While these medicines have clear benefits there have been increasing concerns with the harms associated with prescribing. There is evidence that GPs are prescribing inappropriately, and GPs are increasingly being sanctioned for inappropriate prescribing. v,vi The development of tolerance, withdrawal and dependence can make the process of changing these medications difficult for prescribers.
