The aim of the education activity is to increase GP's knowledge of appropriate medical imaging referrals specifically relating to breast conditions by presenting relevant case studies, discussing management and non-invasive options.

Relevance to General Practice

Breast Cancer is the most common cancer affecting women in Australia. 
In 2017, it was estimated that 17,586 Australian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. One in eight Australian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer before the age of 85. 
In order to successfully manage these conditions GPs require information on updates in patient management and imaging options.

Learning outcomes
  • To identify the most appropriate investigations for common breast signs and symptoms
  • To apply new advances in medical imaging in the management of patients presenting with common breast complaints
  • To identify the timing and indication for referral of a patient with breast disease
  • To improve patient safety and clinical outcomes by identifying the most appropriate imaging modality
  • To understand the patient journey and how to negotiate the health system for optimal patient outcomes
