162881 - Queensland Opioid Treatment Program (QOTP) 2019

  • : Online

This e-learning course provides participants with the theoretical understanding of identifying opioid dependence, selecting and implementing treatment options and the ongoing management of pharmacotherapies.

This module is prerequisite learning for practitioners to become authorised to prescribe opioid treatment to dependent persons in Queensland, under the Health (Drugs and Poisons) Regulation 1996.

Relevance to General Practice

Australia has an opioid problem. The evidence for opioid substitution as part of a treatment program for opioid use disorder is substantial and robust. GPs are well placed to help provide evidence-based and holistic care to persons who are identified as opioid dependent. More often, these patients present with opioid-use related harms, from constipation through to persistent pain, depression through to injecting harms. But GPs lack the time, resources and confidence to respond, with attitudes and apprehension impeding the delivery of effective interventions.?With a rising incidence of opioid dependence, GPs need to feel confident and supported in delivering evidence-based care, that enables continuity of care an enhances the therapeutic relationship leading to improved health outcomes for their patients. The module provides a theoretical understanding for identifying opioid dependence, selecting and implementing treatment options and the ongoing management of pharmacotherapies.

Learning outcomes
  • Describe opioid dependence as a medical diagnosis for the individual, and discuss opioid dependence as a wider public health challenge.
  • Correctly interpret legislative frameworks and evidence-based clinical guidelines to ensure that opioid-dependent people have improved health outcomes.
  • Evaluate a patient using a bio-psycho-social alcohol and other drug assessment to ensure a systematic approach to care of those with opioid use disorder.
  • Apply pharmaceutical knowledge and rational prescribing principals to ensure the safety of opioid treatment medications prescribed in the community.
  • Describe assessment procedures and treatment plans for medication assisted treatment with methadone or buprenorphine.
