Advancing imaging technologies have made thyroid nodules more easily detectable. GPs then have the task of differentiating those that are malignant or require surgery, from those that are benign. They are involved in pre-operative investigation and post-operative care of patients undergoing thyroid surgery.
Inguinal and abdominal hernias are common. There has been increasing negative media coverage about hernia repair with mesh. There is also evidence to suggest that watchful waiting may be the best course of action for some patient groups with inguinal hernias.
Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in Australia with over 16,000 new cases diagnosed each year. GPs are the first interface with patients with positive bowel cancer screening results and provide ongoing support in care of patients with colorectal cancer.
