163348 - Back and neck pain - causes, treatment and management

  • : Online

This discussion will focus on the common presentation of back and neck pain, in particular;
-cervical radiculopathy
-management of back pain and sciatica in 2019, looking at assessment, investigation and minimally invasive treatment options
- the current surgical management of spinal metastasis, emerging role of minimal invasive techniques

Relevance to General Practice

Neck pain and cervical radiculopathy is one of the most common presentations in general practice. More than two-thirds of the population will experience neck pain at some point in their lives. Neck pain accounts for 15% of soft tissue presentations in general practice. The associated significant socioeconomic burden is due to indirect costs such as work absenteeism and disability which accounts for 75% of the total cost of neck pain (2). While the majority of cases are attributable to benign muscular skeletal conditions, neurological and orthopaedic pathology may present similarly.

Learning outcomes
  • To discuss a systems approach to clinical assessment, investigations and treatment algorithm for patients with back pain and sciatica
  • Understand how to safely assess and diagnose cervical radiculopathy in patients and when to refer to a specialist
  • To describe the epidemiology and clinical and radiological features of spinal metastasis and malignant cord compression
