Obesity in Pregnancy

Relevance to General Practice

Obesity in pregnancy increases the risk of complications and negative birth outcomes for the mother and the baby (Safer Care Victoria, 2019). Obesity can also mean a lifetime of potential health risks for the mother and child (Australian Guidelines for Healthy Eating, 2014). Pregnancy is a time when women are known to be open to behavioural change and have regular contact with there general practitioner (RACGP, 2016). Effective management of obesity in pregnancy can promote behavioural change and reduce the risks (Safer Care Victoria 2019).
