163626 - Avant live: Insights - Voluntary Assisted Dying Act

  • : Online
Relevance to General Practice

Voluntary assisted dying laws came into effect in Victoria on 19 June 2019. The Voluntary Assisted Dying Act 2017 allows doctors to prescribe patients a medication to cause their death, if the person meets strict eligibility criteria and has completed the request and assessment process.

It is essential that General practitioners are aware of the legal and ethical requirements of the legislation prior to supporting a patient participating in a VAD process.

Learning outcomes
  • 1. Discuss the process of Voluntary Assisted Dying from a General Practitioners perspective.
  • 2. Identify and comply with the legal requirements and processes outlined in the VAD legislation (Safety)
  • 3. Demonstrate the reporting requirements throughout the process.
  • 4. Develop an overview on the prohibition on raising the issue.
