This session aims to provide a greater understanding in common ENT issues that are presented in daily general practice. 
Course outline 
This education session will cover: 
• Management of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) 
• Paediatric recurrent ear infection and tonsillitis 
• Complications of otitis media 
• Hoarse voice 
• Approach to management of dysphonia 
• Epistaxis management

Relevance to General Practice

Approximately 4% of GP encounters are solely for ears. In 2013–14, ear problems constituted 3.6 out of every 100 general practice consultations. Of these encounters, 0.8 were due to acute otitis media/myringitis, and 0.8 were due to ear wax problems. In addition, 5% of medical specialist referrals were to an ear, nose and throat specialist.

Learning outcomes
  • Recognise the red flags for recurrent/chronic tonsillitis that requires specialist referral
  • Discuss the appropriate management of epistaxis
  • Identify the management strategies for a range of common paediatric ENT presentations
  • Identify symptoms indicative of chronic rhinosinusitis
