164123 - Ophthalmology essentials for GPs

  • : Online

Ophthalmology update.

Relevance to General Practice

Approximately 300,000 Australians have glaucoma. Generally there are no symptoms or warning signs in the early stages of this eye condition. The loss of sight is usually gradual and a considerable amount of peripheral (side) vision may be lost before there is an awareness of any problem. It is important to note that glaucoma blindness is irreversible. Therefore, early detection is crucial as glaucoma treatment can save remaining vision but it does not improve eyesight.

Learning outcomes
  • Discriminate different presentations of floaters and formulate appropriate management of identified conditions.
  • Implement practice systems for early detection and management of glaucoma.
