A presentation by Dr. Melanie Bensen, palliative care physician based with the Gippsland Regional Consultancy Service entitled “The Time of Dying” focusing on diagnosing dying, the prescribing and role of anticipatory medications/measures, and Palliative sedation. The presentation will highlight the recently developed GRPCC CPG guidelines for the use of palliative sedation that provides a framework for the discussion of this important area of end of life care. Susan Jury, the voluntary assisted dying care navigator, will present on voluntary assisted dying and be available to answer any questions

Relevance to General Practice

End of life care issues regarding anticipatory prescribing can be challenging for GPs, particularly with palliative care patients with complex needs. 
With the introduction of the Voluntary Assisted Dying laws in July 2019 it is imperative to improve the knowledge and capability of GPs role in the management of palliative and end of life care. 
These forums will present current evidence based learning regarding anticipatory medication prescribing including palliative sedation. 
The forums will provide opportunity to discuss issues arising around the Voluntary Assisted Dying Act that was implemented in July 2019. 
It will also discuss the support and referral to the Gippsland Regional Palliative Care Consultancy Service for those palliative care patterns with complex end of life needs.
