Dr Jeff Bertucen will provide an overview of the following key topics: 
• Neurobiology of Substance Use Disorders 
• Epidemiology 
• Clinical Presentation and Diagnosis, including Dual Diagnosis and Multi-morbidity 
• Treatment Possibilities 
• Future Directions 
The presentation will be based on scientific evidence, which will be supported by bibliographic references. Advice based on clinical experience will also be included in the presentation. 

Relevance to General Practice

As the frontline of mental health treatment in Australia, GPs require an understanding of what support and training is available for them to identify and manage substance use disorders and psychiatric diagnoses. 

More than 130,000 Australians were treated for alcohol or drug problems in 2017-18 at publicly funded clinics, amounting to one in every 166 people, the latest national data shows.
