This Educational Forum targets GP’s and Specialists to attend an informative evening ‘Matters of the Heart’, presented by leading Interventional Cardiologists and a Cardiothoracic Surgeon. GPs will gain an understanding of current management of aortic stenosis and cardiac rhythm. GPs will also gain an appreciation of the therapeutic options available for mitral valve disease and gain a fresh perspective about Angina, an old disease.

Relevance to General Practice

The Central Coast has a population now approaching the 400,000mark, generally has a lower socioeconomic demographic compared to the Sydney region, and this often leads to patients having a higher risk factor profile for heart disease, including obesity, smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes. This problem is compounded by the fact that the Central Coast has traditionally been a retirement area. As the population of the coast is generally elderly, there is an increase in incidence of heart failure among this population, and GP’s need up to date knowledge of diagnosis and treatment in this area and in addition have knowledge in the latest technology used in the cardiac arena. Although it remains an attractive area for retirees, there are also now a much larger percentage of young patients with significant risk factors for heart disease, and prevention is very important particularly in this population.
