'Love your heart' workshop will provide participants with an update on new developments, reviewing cardiology concepts as well as looking at how patients present. This interactive workshop will focus on women's cardiovascular disease and what tests to order. It will also include an ECG refresher session as well as a 'healthy heart' presentation by an exercise physiologist and dietitian.

Relevance to General Practice

According to the 2017-18 Australian Bureau of Statistics National Health Survey, 1.2 million Australians have experienced heart, stroke and vascular disease. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death and disease burden in Australia, with 18,590 deaths in 2017 attributed to heart disease, this means 1 Australian die every 28 minutes due to heart disease. In Australian women, CVD is the leading cause of illness and death, contributing to almost one-third of all deaths among women and with over half a million have had one or more heart, stroke and/or vascular disease. CVD is responsible for a significant proportion of general practitioners’ workload contributing to at least one-fifth of GP encounters with women. A healthy lifestyle, which includes maintaining a healthy weight, being smoke-free, doing regular exercises and eating a varied diet of healthy foods is the best way to look after the heart.

  • Discuss and recommend lifestyle changes to keep patients fit and healthy to prevent heart disease and as secondary prevention after a heart attack.
