An interactive face-to-face workshop designed for Northern Territory General Practice Education (NTGPE) accredited GP supervisors by invitation only; this workshop covers the following topics of 1) Using evidence-based medicine for diagnostic decision making, 2) How GP supervisors can teach GP registrars to think via illness scripts, 3) How GP supervisors can teach GP registrars how to communicate evidence, and 4) Facilitating feedback and feed forward with your GP Registrar.

Relevance to General Practice

General practice demands very high-level skills of its general practitioners. Managing complex personal, clinical, family and social problems involves developing sufficient knowledge and skill to access the right sources of information. This then needs to be interpreted and judged to be suitable for specific patients. Their needs and values must also be incorporated in the whole process. Shared understanding is a key component of any consultation and a specific session will address this in how to communicate evidence. This workshop is about GP supervisors further developing their knowledge and skills in assisting GP registrars to think like a general practitioner and apply the principles of Evidence Based Medicine in the real-life practice setting. Additionally, a revision on how to engage in effective feedback with GP registrars will be covered.

Learning outcomes
  • Develop the ability to assess and support GP registrars in their diagnostic decision making.
  • Develop the skills and methods for communicating evidence to patients and formulate ways of passing these onto GP registrars.
  • Demonstrate the difference between using Pendleton’s approach and a learner centred method based on narrative, reflection and the Kolb Model.
  • Develop a teaching approach based on the illness script model for GP registrars to practice safety and think more like an experienced General Practitioner.
