166078 - Rural GP Obstetrics and Gynaecology Forum

The GP Obstetrics and Gynaecology Forum is designed to up skill rural GP Obstetricians and Obstetrics and Gynaecology Specialists in effectively managing obstetric emergencies. Participants will gain additional knowledge and skills in neonatal resuscitation, postpartum haemorrhage, pre-eclampsia, shoulder dystocia, vaginal assisted delivery and complicated caesarean sections.

Relevance to General Practice

Rural General Practitioners (GPs) practicing Obstetrics and Gynaecology, should be supported with appropriate resources and activities through continuing professional development to maintain their obstetrics knowledge and skills (1). Ongoing professional development will ensure that GPs meet college requirements for accreditation and re-certification (1). Simulation training is evidently found to reduce errors and improve perinatal outcomes through reduced morbidity (2, 3, 4). Research has shown benefits of simulation training for managing shoulder dystocia, post-partum haemorrhage and pre-eclampsia (5). These benefits include improvements in delivery as well as improved knowledge, technical skills and teamwork (5).

Learning outcomes
  • Describe and apply the principles of the neonatal resuscitation algorithm ensuring safe practice. (systems based)
  • Apply key learnings to improve management of perinatal and neonatal outcomes of vaginal assisted delivery and vaginal breech births
  • Confidently recognise and manage obstetric emergencies including shoulder dystocia, pre-eclampsia, postpartum haemorrhage and complicated caesarean sections
  • Explain the general principles for teamwork during an obstetric emergency
