167171 - A Case Based Presentation of Upper Limb Management Options in the Context of the WorkCover System

  • : Online

This educational event provides general practitioners with expert knowledge on the assessment, diagnosis and management of upper limb conditions. Common conditions and injuries will be discussed along with available novel treatments and advanced surgical techniques. The event will facilitate attendees to gain a thorough understanding of the Workcover process in determining approval of claims/injuries and treatment entitlements.

Relevance to General Practice

Musculoskeletal conditions are responsible for a major burden in the Australian health system, affecting around 28% of the population – more than six million Australians. These conditions consume enormous healthcare and social resources, with $5.7 billion spent on arthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions in 2008–09.

Patients presenting to their GPs with work-related issues are common, with more than 75% of work-related encounters claimable through workers’ compensation. Between 2015 - 2016, there were 104,770 serious workers compensation claims made nationally, with 90% of these due to injury and musculoskeletal disorders.

GPs play an important role in treating patients who present with a workplace injury, as they provide the initial assessment and diagnosis, and are responsible for acute management as well as coordinating the communication between the worker, employer and wider healthcare team.
