Musculoskeletal conditions are responsible for a major burden in the Australian health system, affecting around 28% of the population – more than six million Australians. These conditions consume enormous healthcare and social resources, with $5.7 billion spent on arthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions in 2008–09.
Patients presenting to their GPs with work-related issues are common, with more than 75% of work-related encounters claimable through workers’ compensation. Between 2015 - 2016, there were 104,770 serious workers compensation claims made nationally, with 90% of these due to injury and musculoskeletal disorders.
GPs play an important role in treating patients who present with a workplace injury, as they provide the initial assessment and diagnosis, and are responsible for acute management as well as coordinating the communication between the worker, employer and wider healthcare team.
