169327 - IUD Mythbusting

  • : Online

This forum will be a discussion on IUDs and cover some of the common myths and misconceptions around their use.

Relevance to General Practice

There is evidence that suggests GP’s are reluctant to prescribe IUD’s, based on concerns around experiences with older devices. This has resulted in IUD myths around the risk of infection, difficulty to insert in nulliparous women and the risk of perforation/expulsion and ectopic pregnancy.

Learning outcomes
  • Confidently counsel patients about IUDs as an effective long term contraception
  • Recognise the role of IUDs for contraception in young, nulliparous patients
  • Utilise MEC guidelines to safely prescribe IUD’s
