169376 - The role of GP's in the assessment and treatment of First Episode Psychosis

  • : Online

The aim of the training is to increase detection and early intervention in First Episode Psychosis and Ultra High Risk of psychosis, educate on appropriate referral pathways and to equip GP's to monitor associated health conditions of young people with psychosis accessing their service.

Relevance to General Practice

Young people frequently present to their GP as the first point of contact when experiencing a first episode psychosis. GP's need to be able to detect symptoms, assess risk and develop a treatment plan in a timely manner to ensure their patients receive the appropriate treatment. This includes understanding referral pathways. Research shows that many GP's lack confidence in their assessment and early detection of psychosis (Simon et al, The International Study on General Practitioners and Early Psychosis. Schizophrenia Research, 2009). Left untreated, first episode psychosis has a large impact on the young person, their family and community. This training will assist GP's to confidently assess, manage and refer young people with psychosis.
