- : Online
The Doctors' Health Advisory Service (DHAS) of Western Australia (WA) has great pleasure in inviting you to join us at the 2019 Australasian Doctors Health Conference (ADHC) in Perth on 22 and 23 November 2019. The theme is the important topic of “Creating a Healthy Workplace”. This will be relevant to doctors at all stages of their career, from medical students, to doctors in training, to doctors established in their chosen career. A particular focus will be looking at the impact of the work environment on a doctor’s health, be they a solo private practitioner or working in a large tertiary hospital. Issues will include the effect of medical culture on work life balance, bullying and harassment, and physical and mental health problems. The Conference will have a positive outlook, focusing on strategies to improve the health and wellbeing of doctors. The conference will be relevant to all doctors and medical students, and anyone involved in the training or management of doctors.Relevance to General Practice
Doctors are less likely than the general population to experience lifestyle-related illnesses, however, they are at greater risk of mental illness, stress-related issues and depression. Doctors are exposed to high levels of stress throughout their profession and are particularly susceptible to experiencing burnout. Additionally, mental ill-health is prevalent across all groups of health professionals, which is of great concern in many countries. Stress, burnout, and depression are significant problems across the continuum of medical education.
Studies have shown that doctors experiencing issues such as burnout and depression are at higher risk of making poor decisions, making more medical errors and have difficult relationships with co-workers. Supporting health professionals throughout their careers is vital to ensure a healthy and sustainable medical workforce leading to increased productivity and a healthier workplace environment.
