181133 - Avant webinar: Prescribing perils - Opioids, polypharmacy and medication errors

  • : Online

Dr Walid Jammal, Senior Risk Advisor at Avant will be joined by other panelists to discuss issues surrounding prescribing, opioid/ benzodiazepine abuse, polypharmacy and medication error and their impact for Australian medical practitioners

Relevance to General Practice

There are many topical subjects surrounding the prescribing practices of Australian doctors. One example of this reported recently in the press is that more people are dying from abusing prescription drugs, which are being misused at historic rates and increasingly for recreational purposes. These drugs are often being accessed through ‘Dr Shopping’ type practices with patients visiting multiple medical practitioners. Another issue is the dangers of polypharmacy, associated with the prescription of too many or unnecessary medicines. These two examples highlight the clarification needed to ensure practitioners and patients are aware of the issues, their rights and responsibilities.
