182805 - check, unit 559, Sexual health, April 2019

  • : Online

This edition of check focuses on the assessment and management of sexual health in general practice.

Relevance to General Practice

Sexual health is a common general practice presentation in Australia. GPs are responsible for diagnosing 80% of sexually transmissible infections. Approximately 75% of Australians have herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), and 12% have herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). Although the incidence of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is unknown, it is highest in women aged 20–29 years, and approximately 10,000 women are treated for PID in hospitals annually in Australia. Syphilis notification increased from 10 per 100,000 to 26 per 100,000 people between 2004 and 2017. HIV PrEP became available on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme on 1 April 2018 and can now be prescribed by any general practitioner to individuals at high risk of HIV. Consistent use of PrEP is associated with a reduction in the risk of HIV of 92% in high-risk individuals.
