Migraine is recognised frequently in Australian general practice, and there is accumulating evidence for various therapeutic benefits of cannabis/cannabinoids. The aim of this course is provide considerations for using medicinal cannabis for the treatment of migraines.

Relevance to General Practice

While medicinal cannabis is legally accessible to medical practitioners for their patients, 1000s of Australians are self-medicating with illegal cannabis to treat a range of serious conditions, such as chronic pain, anxiety, depression and sleep problems. Australian GPs get constant inquiries from their patients about medicinal cannabis, but the majority of GPs feel their knowledge is inadequate to discuss its access, safety, and effectiveness. Migraine is recognised frequently in Australian general practice, and there is accumulating evidence for various therapeutic benefits of cannabis/cannabinoids. Proper training and education around medicinal cannabis will enable GPs to talk to their patients and deter them from using illegal cannabis. It will also empower them to use the evidence-based approach to treat patients with medicinal cannabis where standard therapies have failed.
